Chicago - Paper Format Guide

If you are thinking of publishing your paper, you should be familiar with the Chicago Manual of Style (CMOS). An essay writer probably needs to format your paper according to the Chicago style. Well, it’s your lucky day, as I am going to share a complete guide by following which you can easily format your paper according to the Chicago style.

General formatting

  • Make sure you are using Times New Roman and font size of 12 pt.
  • Use margins of at least one inch
  • Double-space your whole paper
  • Start new paragraphs with a half-inch indent
  • You can either place the page number in the header in the right or bottom center in the footer

Note: If your supervisor has asked you to follow a specific guideline then you should apply for your paper.

Title page

Chicago format does not require a title page for your paper. However, if your supervisor has asked you to add one, you should add the title of your paper somewhere about one-third of the way down the page. If your paper has a subtitle, you should add it to the very next line. Both title and subtitle should be of the same size, in bold and headline capitalization.

About one-third way up the end of the page, you should add information about your supervisor and any other information like student name, ID, course code, etc. that your professor might have asked you to add to your cover page.

Note: The title page is not numbered and all text on it is centrally aligned.

According to the Chicago format, you should be using headline capitalization for your headings. If you are using different levels of headings in your papers, you should keep a consistent difference between each type of heading. Your headings must stand out from the rest of the text.

Number and Acronyms

If you are following Chicago format, you should not be using numerals for numbers up to 99. If this article was in Chicago format, I would have written “99” in words as ninety-nine. However in case of specific measurements, you must use decimals, i.e. 60 kg.

You are supposed to write the complete words that the acronym stands for when using them the first time. Thereafter, you will use the acronym alone.

Note: You must not use acronyms or numerals at the beginning of a sentence.

Longer quotations of more than four lines are mentioned as block quotes. You do not use quotation marks in block quotes. They are separated from the rest of the text by a blank line on both ends. They have an additional indent of half-inch and are single-space, unlike the rest of the paper.

In-text citations and notes

Unlike other citation styles, CMOS provides guidelines for two types of citations:

  • Author-date: In this citation style, you are to directly place parenthetical in-text citations. You are supposed to mention the last name of the author followed by the year of publication in parenthesis.
  • Notes and bibliography: In this style, offered by CMOS, the citations, corresponding to the superscript numbers in the text, are written in either footnotes or endnotes. Where footnotes appear at the bottom of each page, endnotes have a separate page that appears before the bibliography page.

Reference list or Bibliography page

If you have used the author-date citation style in your paper, you will add a reference list page on which you will enlist all the sources that you have used throughout your paper.

On the other hand, if you have used notes and bibliography citation style, you will add a bibliography page mentioning all the sources that you used in your paper.

Note: If a reference is longer than a line, you will add a half-inch indent to all lines except the first line.
